19 Weird and Crazy Excuses to Take a Day Off
October 7, 2010 Oddies, People
Don’t feel like waking up to go to work? Running late? Your friend showed up with tickets to the baseball game on a weekday? Call up your manager and excuse yourself from work. But for that you need to have a solid reason… You can always say “My dog ate my briefcase”.. but that would be too lame wouldn’t it?
A press release published by CareerBuilder showed that people actually do give lame excuses for being absent from work (you won’t believe just how lame these excuses are!). Ladies and gentlemen, here are some classical excuses which people actually gave to their hiring managers:
- “I was sprayed by a skunk.”
- “I tripped over my dog and was knocked unconscious.”
- “My bus broke down and was held up by robbers.”
- “I was arrested as a result of mistaken identity.”
- “I forgot to come back to work after lunch.”
- “I couldn’t find my shoes.”
- “I hurt myself bowling.”
- “I was spit on by a venomous snake.”
- “I totaled my wife’s jeep in a collision with a cow.”
- “A hitman was looking for me.”
- “My curlers burned my hair and I had to go to the hairdresser.”
- “I eloped.”
- “My cat unplugged my alarm clock.”
- “I had to be there for my husband’s grand jury trial.”
- “I had to ship my grandmother’s bones to India.” (note: she had passed away 20 years ago)
- My dog wasn’t feeling well, so the employee tasted the dog’s food and then got sick.
- “Someone put LSD in my salad.”
- “Stuck on an island – canoe floated away.”
- “My favorite American Idol contestant was voted off.”
- “I didn’t think I had to come in if I had time in my vacation bank. I thought I could take it whenever I wanted.”
- “I’m not feeling well and wanted to rest up for the company’s holiday party that night.”
Although thee excuses above may sound funny, these were actually given by workers in order to take a day off. Honesty is the best policy, says Rosemary Haefner, vice president of human resources for CareerBuilder.com. “If you’re a strong employee and you’re truthful about the time you need off, your employer is likely to give it to you.” But if you get caught in a lie, you risk your reputation and possibly even your job.
